Tone:

The author's attitude toward a subject.

Diction:

The word choice, connotation and denotation of words and their impact.

Figurative Language:

A tool an author uses to help the reader visualize what is happening.

Inference:

A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning.

Supporting details:

Information in a story that explains, defines, supports or helps one to identify the main idea and determine theme of a text.

Stream of consciousness:

A literary technique that presents the thoughts and feelings of a character as they occur.

Theme:

The life lesson, author's message, or moral of a story in a work of fiction. It is not explicit, literal, or directly stated. It's an inference the author makes.
