Annotation:

A critical or explanatory note or body of notes added to a text.

Close reading:

Careful and purposeful reading used to uncover layers of meaning that lead to deep comprehension.

EBSR:

Evidence-Based Selected Response.

Literary nonfiction or creative nonfiction:

A genre of writing that uses literary styles and techniques to create factually accurate narratives.

Informational texts:

Texts that inform the reader about the natural or social world. Different from fiction and other forms of nonfiction, informational text does not utilize characters.

Slave narrative:

A literary form that grew out of the written accounts of enslaved Africans in Britain and its colonies.

Heavy wooden stake.
