Glossary

Allegory:

A story that illustrates a concept or delivers a message by using symbolic and figurative language throughout the entire story.

Enlightened:

Free of ignorance; aware and knowledgeable.

Figurative language:

Wording in which the intended meaning is not what is plainly stated, often stated in descriptions that are comparisons, repetitions imitations or exaggerations.

Parable:

A simple story that teaches a lesson.

Text-dependent questions:

Questions that ask you to cite evidence from texts and back up claims without using prior knowledge or experience.

Symbolism:

Something tangible (like an object, person, place, or action) that represents something intangible (like an idea, feeling, or concept). Example:Birds symbolize freedom because of their ability to fly.

Unenlightened:

Ignorant; lacking in knowledge or experience.
